ADVERTISING FEATURE: Beer Fest comes to head

CRAFT MEN: Newcastle Beer Fest co-ordinator Taiyo Namba and event founder Luke Tilse look forward to putting Newcastle on the craft beer map. It’s on again! The Newcastle Beer Fest (formally ‘the Boardwalk Beer Fest’) is set for its biggest year yet.

This year brings in a few changes, not least of which is the move to Camp Shortland (next to Nobbys beach).

This has granted the event the ability to grow, with increased numbers, and less crowding, whilst still being next to the iconic Newcastle harbour.

The event has also updated its name to reflect what it truly is; THE Newcastle Beer Fest.

“We always intended the festival to grow and become a focal point for people who appreciate independent craft beer,” event founder Luke Tilse said.

“A way for the town to celebrate its love of ale. The new name, we feel, better reflects this.”

With a new name, and new site, also comes a new format.

The event will be held over two days, with NSW breweries being on Saturday, and the Rest of Australia being on the Sunday.

Over 42 breweries will be represented at the festival over the course of the weekend –afestival record.

To cap off the changes, Newcastle craft beer powerhouse, The Grain Store, will have what they are calling a “Hop up Bar” with a focus on (you guessed it) hop-driven beers.

The Happy Wombat will be running a Nitro and Sours bar, if the hoppy stuff isn’t your thing.

There might be a new site, new name, and new format, but Tilse’s partner in crime, Taiyo Namba, of Nagisa Restaurant, insists that the core of the festival remains the same.

“Your ticket price gains you entry to the fun, a tasting cup, 10 beer tokens, and a food token –exactly the same as every other year,” Mr Namba said.

“The stuff that makes the festival what it is will not change.”

This year, MEET restaurant will join the fray with their popular meaty delights. Van Dogs, and Rustic Flair will also be involved, along with usual suspectsNagisa and The Happy Wombat.

With all of that in mind, it’s important to remember that each year since the event began it has sold out.
